Teachers and their responsibilities
Individuals who choose teaching as their profession assume a profound obligation to align themselves with the ideals of this profession. Teachers find themselves constantly under the watchful eyes of their students and society as a whole. Hence, it is of utmost importance that their actions and behaviour harmonize with the expected ethical standards. Teachers should serve as exemplars, inspiring students to embrace the values outlined in the national education framework. Furthermore, the dignity of the teaching profession necessitates that educators possess a calm, patient, and communicative disposition, coupled with an amiable temperament.
Teachers shall:
1. Uphold Professional Conduct:
- Adhere to a responsible code of conduct and demeanor expected by the community.
2. Commit to Lifelong Learning:
- Engage in continuous professional growth through ongoing study and research.
3. Foster Knowledge Sharing:
- Express free and candid opinions through active participation in professional meetings, seminars, conferences, etc., contributing to the growth of knowledge.
4. Be Engaged in Professional Organizations:
- Maintain active membership in professional organizations and work towards improving education and the profession through such memberships.
5. Dedicate Themselves to Teaching and Research:
- Carry out their teaching, tutorials, practicals, seminars, and research work conscientiously and with dedication.
6. Uphold Ethical Standards:
- Strictly discourage and avoid engaging in plagiarism and other unethical behaviors in teaching and research.
7. Respect University Guidelines:
- Abide by the Act, Statute, and Ordinance of the University, and respect its ideals, vision, mission, cultural practices, and traditions.
8. Collaborate with Educational Responsibilities:
- Co-operate and assist in carrying out functions related to educational responsibilities within the college and university. This includes aiding in evaluating applications for admission, providing advice and counseling to students, and participating in the administration of university and college examinations.
9. Participate in Extra-Curricular Activities:
- Engage in extension, co-curricular, and extra-curricular activities, including community service.
With Respect to Students, Teachers Shall:
10. Respect Students' Rights:
- Respect the rights and dignity of students in expressing their opinions.
11. Provide Fair and Equal Treatment:
- Treat students justly and impartially, regardless of their characteristics such as religion, caste, gender, or socio-economic background.
12. Individualize Teaching:
- Recognize differences in aptitude and capabilities among students and strive to meet their individual needs.
13. Encourage Growth:
- Encourage students to enhance their competence, develop their personalities, and contribute to community welfare.
14. Promote Values:
- Inculcate values such as scientific temper, inquisitiveness, and ideals of democracy, patriotism, social justice, environmental protection, and peace among students.
15. Assess Merit Fairly:
- Focus on the students' achievements when assessing their merit.
16. Avoid Incitement:
- Refrain from inciting students against other students, colleagues, or administration.
With Respect to Colleagues, Teachers Shall:
17. Show Mutual Respect:
- Treat other members of the profession as they would like to be treated and offer assistance for professional improvement.
18. Avoid Unsubstantiated Allegations:
- Avoid making unsupported allegations against colleagues to higher authorities.
19. Be Inclusive:
- Refrain from considering factors like caste, creed, religion, race, or gender in their professional endeavours.
With Respect to Authorities, Teachers Shall:
20. Follow Rules and Procedures:
- Fulfill their professional responsibilities in accordance with existing rules, procedures, and methods.
21. Cooperate with Institutional Policies:
- Collaborate with the authorities to enhance institutional policies, accepting various roles and responsibilities as necessary.
22. Maintain Dignity and Integrity:
- Collaborate with the authorities in ways that respect the dignity of the profession and the institution's interests.
23. Communicate Position Changes:
- Notify promptly when a change of position is due to occur.
With Respect to Non-Teaching Staff, Teachers Shall:
24. Be Equal Partners:
- Treat non-teaching staff as colleagues and equal partners in a cooperative effort within the educational institution.
25. Support Joint-Staff Councils:
- Assist in the functioning of joint-staff councils covering both teaching and non-teaching staff.
With Respect to Guardians, Teachers Shall:
26. Maintain Contact with Guardians:
- Ensure that institutions maintain contact with the guardians, send performance reports when necessary, and arrange meetings for mutual exchange of ideas to benefit the institution.
