ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of English, Nabagram Hiralal Paul College, has existed since the inception of the Institution. It had catered to the needs of English General students till 2003 when the Honours course was introduced by the University of Calcutta. The department introduces the students to the world of English literature and equips them for an analytical insight into the various interpretations of texts. Through this training the students are prepared for various professions like teaching, management, media, government jobs and other avenues. At present the department consists of 1 Associate Professor, 2 Assistant Professors and 1 SACT faculty.

Mission:

  • To provide the students with the skill to understand and appreciate English literature
  • To enable the students to formulate their own understanding so that they can critically analyse various forms of literature
  • To train the students to identify the philological aspects of English language

Vision:

The vision is to develop the department as a centre for excellence that will enable the students to excel in critical thinking, English language analysis and literary appreciation

Strengths:

  • Dedicated and hardworking faculty
  • Good personal relations with students and alumni
  • Effective teaching in spite of limited resources
  • Catering to the weak students by guiding them for the composition of their tutorials
  •  Students are encouraged and trained to present their ideas coherently through student seminars

Weakness:

  •  Skewed student teacher ratio leads to compromise in quality of teaching- learning
  • Administrative work compromises with time for students
  • Lack of supporting staff affects the working of the department

Opportunity:

  • The department helps in the improvement of the language skills of students
  • Proficiency in English language and literature equips the students for various job opportunities

Challenges:

  • Shortage of time for detailed analysis of syllabus in line with CBCS and CCF
  • Reception problem in students from rural hinterland
