Laboratory of Eco
nomics is very big. It consists of the entire human world but our CBCS syllabus introduced from the Academic session 2018-19 incorporated a pair of DSE papers DSE A1.1 Applied Econometrics in 5th semester and DSE A2.2 Issues in Indian Economy in 6th Semester for Economics Honours students which require Computer laboratory for the first time to conduct Laboratory based papers having scheduled 4 credit practical classes. Though students enrolment of Economic Honours is very low and those who are taking up Economics Honours here, opted as last option during pandemic, we offer those two Honours DSE papers for their job-friendly curricula. Our department utilized the two common computer laboratories for practical practice of students and both internal teacher as well as external teacher who train ed our students R software using their own personal laptop. We are glad to know in CU examiners’ meeting that our college is one of the two colleges affiliated under Calcutta University who has offered ‘R’ software where many reputed college opted for DSE A1.2 Economic History of India and others who opted for DSE papers DSE A1.1 Applied Econometrics opted for ‘STATA’ software. ‘R’ software has vast application in commerical field as it is open software and this software can read cloud data which is not possible by ‘STATA’ software.
This is one of our computer laboratory where Dr. Uttam Halder, Assistant Professor, Ser
ampore Girls College honored us by accepting the first Teacher Exchange programme of our college taking final class of DSE A1.1 Apllied Econometrics software using ‘R’ on 24th December, 2022.
The photo below is with our beloved students of Economics Honours.
Our departmental faculty Dr. Bishan Sanyal attempted to introduce students of Economics Honours with data processing in ‘Excel’ and ‘STATA’ also. In spite of non-availability of ‘R’ knowing faculty in college, Teacher Exchange Programme helped us to teach such a job oriented software ‘R’. Combined with DSE B1.2 Financial economics and exposer to Bombay Stock Exchange in Educational Excursion, department hopes that we have tried our best to prepare our Economics Honours student for professional career in future in financial analytics, data science or artificial intelligence etc.
